Global mobile phone OLED panel shipments surpass LCD in the Q1 2024
In a significant industry milestone, global smartphone OLED panel shipments surpassed LCD shipments for the first time in Q1 2024, according to the latest report from research firm Omdia.
The report shows that in 2023, total smartphone display panel shipments reached 1.45 billion units, growing 5% year-over-year. This figure is expected to reach 715 million units in the first half of 2024, representing a 9% increase.
Within this, AMOLED panel shipments soared to 182 million units in Q1 2024, a 39% year-over-year jump. In contrast, TFT LCD shipments declined 10% to 172 million units over the same period.
Omdia analysts attribute this shift to Chinese display manufacturers supplying high-quality AMOLED panels at more competitive prices to domestic smartphone brands. This has rapidly replaced TFT LCD, especially in the mid-to-high-end smartphone market. AMOLED’s market share is forecast to further grow to 53% in Q2 and 56% in Q3.
Furthermore, the anticipated launch of the iPhone 16 series is expected to significantly drive AMOLED smartphone panel shipments, leading to AMOLED overtaking TFT LCD for the full year of 2024.
Starting this year, OLED is poised to take the dominant position in the smartphone display market, signaling the waning days of LCD in the smartphone realm.
This milestone underscores the rapid technological advancements and evolving consumer preferences in the smartphone industry. As OLED displays offer superior image quality, power efficiency, and design flexibility, their growing adoption is transforming the smartphone display landscape.
Going forward, smartphone manufacturers will likely continue prioritizing OLED technology to meet the demands of discerning consumers and maintain a competitive edge in the market.
